Freddie Mac Average Mortgage Rates

In 1971, when Freddie Mac began surveying lenders for mortgage data, interest rates for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages ranged from 7.29% to 7.73%. Throughout the 1970s and 80s, mortgage rates steadily climbed as unchecked inflation contributed to a volatile national economy.

Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s chief economist, says mortgage rates are showing a steadiness last seen in the fall of 2016. "The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage barely inched up this week, continuing the summer trend of essentially being flat," he said.

The average U.S. rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage rose two basis points this week from a two-year low, according to the latest Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Market Survey. The rate was 3.84%.

30-year fixed-rate mortgage (frm) averaged 3.73 percent with an average 0.5 point for the week ending June 27, 2019, down from last week when it averaged 3.84 percent. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 4.55 percent.
